Diversity & Inclusion

My heart breaks for members of the black community that live every day with fear. A fear, I have the privilege, of never knowing. No matter how much I empathize or speak out, I will ever know what it's like to fear as they must.  You see, when people speak of systemic racism and inequalities, I used to have a hard time digesting that. I often thought, "we all make choices and can get there if we want to. It's just not as easy for some of us, but if you work hard and continue to persevere, you'll get there. That's the deal, that's the American Dream". Turns out, like most things in life, it's just not that simple.  In one of my graduate classes I had to take a multicultural counseling course, I signed up for it once, read the first chapter of the book, and dropped. Why? My thoughts were somewhat like: "Not ready to deal with this. Not ready to read about how it's my fault because I am white. What did I ever do? I worked really hard to get to c...
